Download: Drake feat. The Weeknd – Crew Love (Shlohmo Remix)

LA-based producer Shlohmo graced us with this new remix of Drake and The Weeknd’s “Crew Love” earlier this week after a request from the latter finally got him to release a finished version. With the beat slowed down and vocals drowning in echoes, Shlohmo’s version actually turns out better than the original and will surely see placement in dozens of DJ sets over the coming weeks.

As a Valentine’s Day gift to his loving fans, Shlohmo also recently released a free download of his mix for the Gilles Peterson program on the BBC from last year. You can check out a link to that below, along with a link to my interview with Shlohmo for LA Weekly, where he talks about his new Vacation EP and how the Low End Theory club night here in LA impacted his development over the years.

Stream: Burial – Kindred EP

After a somewhat surprising but expected leak over the weekend, famed UK producer Burial’s Kindred EP was finally released digitally on the Hyperdub online store today. Following such recent successes as the Street Halo EP and the wondrous Massive Attack collaboration “Four Walls”, the Kindred EP adheres more closely to the stylistic patterns of the latter.

With much longer tracks and a more dense and atmospheric tone than his earlier material, songs like the title track and “Ashtray Wasp,” each containing several movements, unfold more like a story or experience rather than a typical song. There’s a link to a stream of the Kindred EP below, which conveniently appears directly on the Hyperdub store page, another one of Kode9′s novel ideas that burgeoning label-heads should probably take note of.

Video: Porcelain Raft – Something In Between

Porcelain Raft released another self-directed video today for the song “Something In Between” off his new album Strange Weekend, released last week on the always reliable Secretly Canadian imprint. I don’t want to gush too much over this album, but it’s definitely the strongest debut I’ve heard thus far in 2012. There’s a link to my full review of the album over at Passion of the Weiss below.

Video / Interview: Electric Guest – “American Daydream”

In the run-up to the release of their debut album Mondo, a new video for Electric Guest’s “American Daydream”, directed by Jorma Taccone of The Lonely Island, surfaced a couple weeks back. The band starts their free Monday night residency at The Echo here in Los Angeles tonight, with Princeton side-project Sleeping Bags opening up the show.

You can also check out my new interview with Electric Guest over at LA Weekly. We talked about the process of recording their album with producer Danger Mouse, how the internet is changing the way music is consumed, and the interesting origin of their band name.

Video: Father John Misty – Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings

Earlier this week, ex-Fleet Foxes drummer and longtime singer-songwriter J. Tillman announced the details of his latest project Fear Fun, which will be released under the name Father John Misty, as opposed to his previous solo releases. A video for the first single “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings” featuring Aubrey Plaza came attached with the announcement. Directed by Noel Paul, the video follows Plaza’s character as she proceeds to trash a funeral and wander out in to the wilderness, before being captured by Tillman and summarily thrown in his van.

With such a striking video, it’d be easy to go on about its star and concept, but the song itself is really the highlight here. Starting off with a heavy drum pattern and a brash guitar melody, the likes of which we’ve never heard from Tillman, “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings” kicks you in the teeth from the start and doesn’t let up until a suspenseful break halts everything about halfway through. A beautiful harmony of lush, layered vocals follows the break, gently easing you back in to the guitar melody before the song’s end. Needless to say, the prospect of a heavier, more upbeat project for Tillman is an exciting one, and we’ll get to hear how it fleshes out on May 1st, when the album is released on Sub Pop.
