MP3: Active Child – Playing House (ft. How To Dress Well)

Waking up to this new Active Child song on Pitchfork this morning was certainly a pleasant surprise, especially when I read it was a collaboration with fellow experimental singer-songwriter How to Dress Well. Interestingly enough, their vocals aren’t layered over top of each other for the majority of the track, Active Child aka LA’s Pat Grossi opting to split their vocal parts in to separate verses. Not a bad idea when you consider the distinctive, extra-terrestrial qualities of each of their voices, and Active Child’s thick R&B production provides a heavier backdrop for Tom Krell (How to Dress Well) to sing against than he’s probably used to from his own solo projects, but the outcome is excellent nonetheless. “Playing House” is from Active Child’s upcoming album You Are All I See, out August 23rd on Vagrant. If you’re not familiar with Active Child, I highly recommend checking out his performance and interview on KCRW from last summer as well.
